Capote – Charming the Deweys (Clip)

Bennett Miller

Bennett Miller is an Academy-Award nominated filmmaker and fine artist whose work is a reflection of his intellectual curiosity.  His films are uniquely observed and distinctly lived in, highlighted by his exacting authorship as a writer and director. There’s an innate verisimilitude across his body of work complete with a biting truth and emotional honesty.

Having dropped out of NYU and refusing to conform to convention, Bennett first gained recognition for his documentary portrait, The Cruise, about eccentric NYC tour guide Timothy “Speed” Levitch. Shot without a crew, The Cruise was a pioneering venture in independent filmmaking and was the first digital MiniDV film to receive theatrical distribution. It won major awards at international festivals, including the top prize of the International Forum at the Berlin International Film Festival.

His first narrative feature Capote is about the famous writer who decides to cover a story on the murder of a Kansas family. The film was nominated for five Oscars, including Best Director, Best Picture, and won Best Actor for Philip Seymour Hoffman’s portrayal of Truman Capote. Bennett’s subsequent feature, Moneyball, starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill garnered six nominations including Best Picture at the Academy Awards. His third film Foxcatcher, starring Channing Tatum, Steve Carell, and Mark Ruffalo, earned Bennett another Oscar nomination for Best Director and led him to winning Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival.

Bennett continues to bring his innovative point-of-view to the creative world in his solo show at NYC’s Gagosian Gallery. Produced using the DALL•E image generator, the works emerged after a five-year period in which Miller researched and shot a documentary film about the technological crossroads at which we now find ourselves.

Alongside his feature film and fine art career, Miller has helmed some of the most iconic campaigns for the world’s most recognizable brands.  He brought his singular blend of observational wit to the memorable “Priceless” Mastercard campaign as well as directing the slice of life spots for American Express featuring Diane von Furstenberg among others.  His commercials for Quilted Northern with Droga5 showcase Bennett’s dynamic range, finding honest moments in any situation. In addition to helming commercials, other short form works include music videos for Bob Dylan and Scarlett Johansson.
